These incredible shorebirds fiercely skim the surface of the water for their food; their mandible remains low, while the top clenches down once the fish are caught.

DESCRIPTION:

Salt Keeper 2023. Featuring Osprey, Menhaden, and Widgeon grass. This is a reflection of a few events along the lower Chesapeake Bay involving osprey and menhaden. Two hands represent as a ‘keeper’ of the salty marine life while an osprey and bits of widgeon grass remain nestled together. A group of Menhaden surround this piece showing the vital need to protect these fish, osprey and the Chesapeake Bay as a whole. This is hand-printed on Japanese Awagami Kozo or Somerset Satin papers sourced from the UK which are highly sought printing papers for this type of medium.

Inspiration Behind the Name: The Osprey Wing

I've never known anything other than the quiet of the coast. The salty, fleeting moments deep within the marshes and the ebb and flow of the crashing waves is where I belong. Looking for a soft place to land, a bed of seaweed greeted me like an old friend. A gentle south wind arrived, carrying endless flocks of shorebirds — their wings speckled against the salt spray. If I leave my fears, can I stay here with you forever, little sandpiper? Their wings wrapped around me as the salt of the tides swept me in. A gentle wind lifted me as I closed my eyes to this sea nest dream. To be in a world without shorebirds is unimaginable to me. This is how The Osprey Wing was created.
